Case Study – Ungana

In 2009, PEPFAR, through CDC Kenya, funded LVCT Health, a local Kenyan NGO that had been successfully implementing PEPFAR programs, to build the capacity of 14 local organizations in the country for a period of five (5) years through the Ungana Project.  LVCT Health utilized its Timisha capacity building model to build technical, organizational, managerial and financial systems of the CBOs and ensure delivery of HTC and other HIV prevention services in line with the national standards. PEPFAR also funded LVCT Health through the same grant to build capacity of and provide technical support to 477 government facilities to scale up Provider Initiated Testing and Counseling (PITC).
Key Achievements

  • Civil Society Organizations had their organisation systems strengthened
  • 477 Ministry of Health facilities in 3 counties received technical assistance to scale up provider initiated testing and counselling
  • 1,813,443 individuals received testing and counselling
  • 102,758 blood pints collected
