SUNSHINE AFTER THE STORM Adolescents Viral Suppression Improvement

For a long time, adolescents and young people were a forgotten age group in the HIV response. This has only come back to bite us with this age group manifesting some of the highest numbers of new infections and lowest viral suppression rates. This was the case one year ago at our LVCT Health Hurlingham Clinic, where adolescents registered one of the lowest viral suppression percentages at 68% which is way below the recommended 90%. This called for a call urgent action to find out what was causing this and how to reverse the trend. A couple of interventions were introduced with the hope of boosting the viral suppression among adolescents. These interventions saw the adolescent viral suppression tremendously improve from 67.8% to 88% between the months of April 2016 and July 2017.
