Ms. Anne Gathumbi

Ms. Anne Gathumbi is a human rights lawyer with over twenty years’ progressive experience as a social justice advocate and international development practitioner in governance, rule of law and access to justice, public health and HIV/AIDS, social economic justice, sexual reproductive health rights and sexual and gender minority rights.

She is the immediate past director of Sexual Health and Rights Program (SHARP) of the Public Health Program at Open Society Foundations where she worked to advance the health and human rights of the inadequately served population; sex workers, prisoners, Lesbian, Gay, Trans and Intersex and people who use drugs through grant-making, capacity building, advocacy, and fund leveraging at the global level.  Ms. Gathumbi has also worked as the Deputy Regional Representative of Trocaire’s East Africa Regional Office for East and Horn of Africa where she provided leadership in making grants to civil society to advance human rights, HIV/AIDS, good governance, women’s rights and humanitarian responses.

She was founder member and Director of the Coalition on Violence Against Women (COVAW), an organization that campaigns for eradication of all forms of violence against women where she spearheaded law and policy reform initiatives on women’s rights issues.

Ms. Gathumbi has worked as a program officer and pioneered legal aid programs for poor and disadvantaged communities such as women, children and prisoners through the human rights work at the Legal Resources Foundation.

Currently Ms. Gathumbi is an independent consultant and offers her skills to the philanthropic sector at international, regional and country levels.

Her consultancies include; Global Fund in the Fight for Aids, TB and Malaria, Ford Foundation Office for Eastern Africa and Robert Carr Networks Fund. Gathumbi is a graduate of the University of Nairobi Law School and holds an Executive MBA from Jomo Kenyatta University of Technology.
