Revolutionizing Medically Assisted Therapy (MAT): Meet EasyFlow-L

Kenya’s Medically Assisted Therapy (MAT) program is a vital lifeline. It helps about 18,000 people across the country who struggle with injectable drugs, especially in the coastal area. Between 2015 and 2017, the first clinics demonstrated that the program was effective, as nearly 8 out of 10 patients (79%) remained with the treatment.

However, expanding these services across the country became difficult because of the money. For years, growth was slowed down by high startup costs, expensive software fees, and a risky dependence on inconsistent donor funding.

LVCT Health’s Stawisha Pwani project has launched a groundbreaking innovation: the first open-source, license-free methadone dispensing system in Kenya. By stripping away costly licensing barriers, EasyFlow-L shatters the hurdles of cost and scalability, making sustainable Methadone Assisted Therapy (MAT) a reality. ,

EasyFlow-L changes this narrative.

Developed locally by LVCT Health’s Stawisha Pwani project, this groundbreaking innovation is built on a robust tech stack of PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, and CSS, the platform shatters the cost barriers of the past. It integrates high-level security features like biometric verification and role-based access controls with real-time analytics and seamless API connectivity for MasterFlex 2000-0078 automated pumps. By aligning perfectly with Kenya’s government interoperability standards and clinical governance for controlled substances, EasyFlow-L is not just a technical upgrade; it is a sustainable, scalable future for addiction care in Kenya.

Impact in Action: Transforming the MAT Landscape

EasyFlow-L is not just a concept; it is a proven success. Currently deployed across seven critical MAT clinics in Coastal Kenya, including Kombani, Kisauni, Malindi, Kilifi, Watamu, Miritini, and Shimo La Tewa Prison, the platform supports over 2,500 active clients, including 161 individuals receiving integrated HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART).

1. Shattering Cost Barriers

EasyFlow-L has rewritten the economics of addiction care. By eliminating predatory proprietary licenses and database fees, we’ve achieved a staggering 84% reduction in setup costs. Initial implementation dropped from KES 3.8 million to just KES 480,000, saving approximately KES 1.9 million annually in recurring costs. These savings ensure that resources stay where they belong: in patient care.

2. Lightning-Fast Care: From Minutes to Seconds

Waiting in line is a thing of the past. Our automated workflows have slashed dispensing times by 90%, dropping from 5 minutes (300 seconds) per client to a mere 30 seconds. In high-traffic clinics, we can now serve 20 clients in under five minutes. This dramatic speed has eliminated long queues and the potential for unrest, creating a calmer, more dignified environment for every beneficiary.

At facilities like Kombani MAT clinic in Kwale County, the feedback is clear: EasyFlow-L has transformed the patient experience. Seamless Transfers: What used to be a paperwork hurdle now takes just one minute via pre-populated digital forms.

Unmatched Accountability: Through automated dose verification and robust digital audit trails, we have elevated patient safety and clinical accuracy to a new gold standard.

Instant Reporting: Complex data generation has gone from a cumbersome task to an under-a-minute click.

By shifting from restrictive, expensive vendors to a system built for and by Kenyans, we have handed the keys back to the health teams on the front lines. When asked by a Grants Officer Representative (GOR) from the US Department of State during a recent visit about the system’s impact, the Mombasa County AIDS and STI Coordinator (CASCO) captured the sentiment in four powerful words: “We Can Now Breathe.”

This is not just about software; it is about the profound relief of being freed from vendor dependencies, technical bottlenecks, and the crushing weight of unsustainable costs. EasyFlow-L has replaced frustration with flow, allowing our health teams to focus on what matters most: saving lives.
